Did You See It?

from The Attention Economy by Frank Tomorrow

about

Part of *The Attention Economy* is the effort to attract our focused attention. Human vision is divided into 2 categories: peripheral and focused. Peripheral vision is what humans with eyesight use, most of the time. It allows us to conduct our lives attending to routine activities, such as driving a car, doing laundry, going for a walk, etc. Focused vision is what *The Attention Economy* thrives on. If you are focused on one thing, such as reading a novel or de-bugging code, it is at the expense of something else. **Did You See It?** is a question asked of connected users, especially via smartphone apps, millions of times a day. Did you see our ad, our specials, our new app, our new campaign, our new survey, our special discount??? Well, did YOU? Phone apps are expertly crafted & marketed to maximize the delivery of attention grabbers, as well as a way to collect user metadata.
Every single action we take — calling our parents/grandparents, cleaning up the kitchen or, scrolling through our phones — is a transaction. We are taking what precious little attention we have and diverting it toward something on our devices. When you pay focused attention to one thing, you ignore something else.
